Triangle of Death When humanity disappears, everything becomes permissible A call for a one-week ceasefire Yasir Arman The video posted this morning on my Facebook page from the Intensive Care Unit at El Obeid Hospital shows death staring civilian patients in the face, heartbreaking suffering, and a power outage that has lasted three days—leading to the loss of patients’ lives at Dilling Hospital and across the entire Triangle of Death: El Obeid–Kadugli–Dilling, as well as the surrounding towns and villages in Habila, Al-Dibabat, Babanusa, dozens of villages, and the outskirts of the war zones. The parties to the war seek victory over their enemies, while civilians pay the price. What value is there in towns and villages that are held or captured after their people have perished? A victory drawn on the graves and coffins of the dead from those villages and cities. We call for a one-week ceasefire in the towns and villages of the Triangle of Death, to allow the United Nations to airdrop and deliver medicine and food to civilians, and to evacuate critically ill patients out of besieged areas. As Sudanese—inside and outside the country—we must defend civilians rights in the Triangle of Death: El Obeid–Kadugli–Dilling and the surrounding areas. Clear insight, human balance, and a sound humanitarian conscience that stands for the right to life demand the defense of civilians and their lives. What is the international community waiting for? What are the peace initiative sponsors by the African Union, the Arab League, and the United Nations waiting for? What is the Quartet—whose noise we hear but whose results we do not see—waiting for? Why does the U.S. envoy not prioritize saving the lives of civilians in the Triangle of Death and pressuring both parties to the war? We appeal to the U.S. envoy, Mr. Massad Boulos, to focus on the civilians in the Triangle of Death, so that the parties do not later sign an agreement in the name of peace over the skulls of civilian victims.
