The African Union on Wednesday suspended Sudan’s membership in the regional body until a civilian-led government is restored.
On 25th October, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan dissolved the joint civilian-military transitional authority breaching an African Union mediated agreement in August 2019 with civilian forces.
Instead, the Sudanese general restored the transitional military council and vowed to hold general elections in July 2023.
The military takeover triggered protests in Sudan and sparked global concern and pressure on the junta to release detained officials and reinstate the civilian-led authority.
The Peace and Security Council of the African Union decided “to suspend, with immediate effect, the participation of the Republic of Sudan in all AU activities until the effective restoration of the civilian-led Transitional Authority,” reads a statement released on Wednesday.
The Council further decided to dispatch a delegation to broker an amicable solution to the current political stalemate between the Sudanese parties.
The decision requested the Chairperson of the Commission Mohamed Musa al-Faki to take to reach out to the leaders of the Transitional Government and the Sovereign Council in order to facilitate the resumption of dialogue towards a successful transition in Sudan.
Also, it requested al-Faki to immediately dispatch to Sudan his emissary to engage with the Sudanese stakeholders on necessary steps needed to expedite the restoration of constitutional order in Sudan.
