South Sudan’s Kiir in New York for UN General Assembly

September 17, 2023 (JUBA) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir is in New York to attend the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The 78th UN assembly will take place in New York from September 18-26, 2023.

The meeting comes at a time of unprecedented setbacks on global progress, with the earth getting hotter, faster as poverty and food insecurity levels worsen.

The minister for the presidency, Barnaba Marial Benjamin said Kiir will address the UN on the implementation of the peace agreement and the conflict in Sudan.

“President Kiir will address the UN General assembly on the status of the implementation of the peace agreement and the steps the country is undertaking to prepare for 2024 general elections,” he told reporters on Sunday.

Marial further said the South Sudanese leader will also highlight on the ongoing regional mediation efforts as well as Juba’s in ensuring the conflict in Sudan ends.

 

 

 

Kiir, he added, “will also discuss regional issues related to the East African Community and the role South Sudan is playing in the region to promote peace and stability”.

The South Sudan leader last attended the 69th session of UNGA in September 2014.
